Cylindroma scalp

The term cylindroma was first used by Billroth in 1859 to describe an orbital tumour with cylindrical shapes seen on histology1. Cylindroma is an uncommon benign tumor, which originates from skin appendages and is most commonly found on the scalp and face with a strong predilection for middle-aged and elderly females. Low power view of cylindroma shows a non- encapsulated tumour nodule arising from the dermis (Figure 1). This is formed by multiple irregular tumour islands, distributed in an aptly named ‘jigsaw’ pattern (Figure 2). Surrounding the tumour islands, and in discrete droplets within the nodules is a thick hyaline deposit (Figure 3). We have diagnosed a case of dermal cylindroma of scalp in an elderly female patient by fine needle aspiration cytology of the lesion and further confirmation was done by histopathology. Cytology consists of many clusters of small round to oval basaloid cells surrounded and attached with magenta coloured acellular hyaline material.
